I read so many articles about "teams" needing to do this and that; this article focuses on increasing product velocity. There are a myriad contributing factors to consider when one wants to improve systems, processes and practices, and one notion I rarely read anything about is managerial accountability. To date, I have never met/seen a "team" that did not have a managerial leader who was ultimately accountable for the results of the team. I realize that organizations experiment with all sorts of organizational structures; but in the end, somewhere, there is a managerial leader empowered with requisite authority, who decides what teams work on and who judges the quality of their work. If the managerial leader has the requisite level of capability, they will be able to effectively lead their teams and provide value-adding coaching. If the managerial leader is not "up" to the role requirements, they will hinder their teams' progress. If organizations wish to improve results, they need to ensure they have managerial leaders with the requisite level of capability leading teams.
